Even though you may be able to pursue a career as a dental assistant without any formal education, you will be more successful, earn more money, and be able to advance in your career by obtaining formal education in the field of dental assisting. As with many other educational endeavors, scholarships exist to pay for part or all of the education for those who aspire to be dental assistants. Not all dental assistant programs are the same, because states regulate which duties a dental assistant can perform and so accordingly, dental assistant programs are going to be somewhat different, depending on your area of study and the state in which you reside. For example, a ten and one half month dental assistant program in Texas costs just over $3,500 including tuition, fees, books, and certifications. This particular program leads to a CDA or Certified Dental Assistant credential which will prepare the student to, among other things, take dental x-rays, assist the dentist in procedures, maintain infection control, and perform basic procedures of dental office management. Although federal aid may be available for this and other dental assistant programs, you may also wish to apply for scholarships. There are major corporations that offer dental assistant scholarships, as well as colleges that offer them. You can look through your favorite search engine for these scholarships, as well as inquire through the school you plan to attend. What may sound like a lot of money, and this is only one example, is actually a nominal price for the education you will receive. Salaries in almost any career are at least partially based on the amount and kind of education one has and by investing in your career in this way, you are sure to recoup the cost by receiving a higher salary almost from the beginning. |
