Is in Home Tutoring Right for Your Child Print E-mail

There are many different kinds of tutoring services available today, and it can be hard to choose the right one.  One type of tutoring is to have a tutor physically come to your home and teach your child.  There are pros and cons with this style tutoring, and you must understand these to determine if home tutoring is right for your family.

First, it is important to understand the benefits of home tutoring.  For starters, home tutoring is convenient.  You can schedule meetings at your convenience, and you don’t have to drop off your child at yet another lesson.  If you have young kids along with the older students who need tutoring, it saves you from having to pack up your brood and drive to an offsite tutor.

Next, home tutoring can give your child a sense of security.  Kids are often nervous, embarrassed, or upset when they need extra help at school.  Going to a tutoring facility can make them feel uneasy, while staying at home and having a tutor come to the kitchen table can seem like a friend has come over to help.  In addition, the familiar environment may make your child more accepting of the tutor’s advice and allows you to monitor your child’s progress.

On the other hand, home tutoring may not be right for every family.  Tutors who come to your home may find that your child is distracted during the tutoring session.  Being in a home where your child knows that toys are in the next room, for example, may make concentration difficult for certain kids.  As a parent, you need to assess your child’s attention span and determine if tutoring at home will be too distracting.  A sterile, tutoring facility works best for kids who can’t focus if there are too many familiar objects.

Home tutoring is also a problem if you have other children who will get in the way or if you run a home business and expect the phone to be ringing during the tutoring session.  At home distractions may interrupt both your child and the tutor, making tutoring at a different location a better idea.
